All but two of these photographs of my wife were
taken during her treatment. Throughout her recovery from surgery and while
dealing with chemotherapy she was determined to maintain the appearance of
health and well being. “I didn’t want people to look at me and think, ‘She’s
dying.’ I wanted them to see the me that was surviving.” The struggle with
appearance, public and private, is repeated in the lives of many women dealing
with chemotherapy and hair loss as they confront the conflict between who
they are and what they look like. Survivor is my dedication of body image
~ body essence to all women confronting ovarian cancer and their personal
struggle. May their essential selves endure.
